Co-ordinated by Dave Parsons, Emma Keating and Steve Sparkes.
Basics (School Years 3-5)
Wednesday – 6.15pm for a 6.30pm start, at the County Ground Track, Swindon. (We meet every week except Christmas week).
For over 40 years we have offered weekly training to this age group. A number of the club's senior athletes started in this group.
We take children from school year 3 (aged 7-8) upwards. There is no charge for the first session and budding athletes do not have to join as members straight away. The session lasts for an hour and they usually do more than one event per session - the group is often split into 2 or 3 and these smaller groups might do throwing first, then the long jump, with a run at the end (just an example).
We hold periodic induction sessions for children who wish to join this group - please DO NOT simply turn up at the track as we won't be able to accommodate your child. Owing to continued demand for these sessions, the U11 group operate a waiting list. If you would like your child to be added to the waiting list, please use the 'Contact Us' form at the bottom right of the page (please add "FAO: Steve Sparkes" in your message.)
We will need the following information in order to add the child to our waiting list:
- Date of Birth
- School Attending
- A contact phone number
Under 11 Competitions
We encourage our young athletes to take advantage of these opportunities and will communicate these to you if your child is a member - for event insurance reasons club membership is usually a condition of entry. There's usually an Open meeting at Marlborough (normally late May), the Wiltshire County Championships in June and we have our own U11 Wednesday night championship for our members in late September/early October.
Our Wessex League Under 11 Competition 'Quad Kids' squad is by invitation only to Year 4 and 5 pupils, based on our observations of the children over time, largely from the preceding September through to Christmas. There are always more children who wish to join the squad than places available. If your child is not selected this year, they may be chosen in a future year or get an opportunity if one of the current squad is unable to attend a meeting. Our young athletes are growing physically, technically and mentally at different speeds so your child may well be saving their star turn for a future date!
