Wessex League Quad Kids, Round 2
The most impressive result from Sunday's competition was so many parents and their supporters lending us their talented children. Many rearranged or postponed holiday breaks so their child could compete. THANK YOU, especially to the parents of Oliver Steward.
Oliver found out around 10.20am he had a place due to another lad dropping out due to illness. With the first event starting at 10.45am, thankfully he was already in the car (mum had packed his running spiked shoes just in case) as he was accompanying his brother to Salisbury. Oliver accounted for 201 of our Boys points!
Sunday was a great day. In the 9 years I've been managing the team (it's only been going 10 years) I cannot recall an occasion when our squad from top to bottom demonstrated such strong strategic awareness running the 600m. Really was impressive to watch.
Secondly, in 57 long jump attempts we had just 3 foul jumps. Amazing quality.
If the results hold up, then we've come first:
- In the U11 Boys (by just 11 points over the Poole boys – they'll be understandably gutted as they put up an immense 899 points themselves)
- In the U11 Girls (by just 15 points over our nearest League table rivals, Bournemouth)
- Overall in today's Quad Kids
Individual efforts of note:
- Jody came 1st overall in the Vortex Throw, Long Jump, 2nd place in 75m and overall 1st place in U11B. Depending on how results went elsewhere this weekend, I think his overall score of 271 points has him in first place at the moment among all Wessex League U11 Boys. It was just 6 points off equalling the club record.
- Jayden took overall first place in the 75m by a hairs breadth from Jody in a great 75m sprint race
- Joe took overall first place in the 600m. He ran the 3rd fastest 600m time ever recorded among Swindon Harriers boys
- Lowri came first overall in the 600m, tied for second in the 75m, and third place overall in U11G
- Nela came first overall in the Vortex Throw
- Charissa came 2nd in the 600m and 2nd overall in U11G
These results were all the more impressive when you consider they were running and throwing into a headwind that accounted for 0.2-0.3 seconds resistance, which meant we had fewer Personal Bests than usual.
We'll find out later on in the week whether we've held onto overall 1st place. 1,637 is a great points score for today but I'll be honest, it is catchable.
