SAL match report

Swindon Harriers senior men's and ladies team were in action at the county ground track on Saturday 17th June for the 3rd of the 5 match series in the southern athletics league, they were up against Poole Runners, Team Kennet and promotion chasing Bournemouth AC.

Despite losing some key points scorers who were competing in the south west schools championships the Harriers finished in a credible second place behind Bournemoth AC.

Harriers claimed several wins throughout the day, the first on the track went to men's team manager Neil Cox in the 400 metre hurdles, further wins went to Abby Chaundy and Lydia Rogers 100m & long jump, Ciaran Cooper and Dom Hodge 400m, Cooper also won at 1500m with Dan Patel winning the B race in his first appearance for the senior team, another debut win went to Darren Davidse in the B 5000m, Aaron Bishop had wins in the 2000m steeple chase and B pole vault, the A string pole vault victory went to masters athlete Nick Walker, hurdler Hannah New and Lydia Rogers won the 200 metres.

The performance of the day went to Rachel Sykes in the 800m, leading from the gun Rachel smashed her PB which she set 9 years ago with a time of 2:18.5. After injury and surgery which may have forced her to quit the sport she was elated with her performance.

To finish the meeting the ladies team won both the 4 X 100 and 4 X 400 relays with the men's team winning the 4 X 400.

Men's team manager Neil Cox said "there were some outstanding individual performances from both our experienced athletes and newcomers to the team"

Harriers athletes of the match were Ciaran Cooper and Rachel Sykes.

The next meeting for the senior team will be again at the county ground track on Saturday 8th July.
